Nepal stands at a pivotal moment in its economic trajectory. As a free-market economy with a vibrant democracy, the country holds immense economic potential. Between 2015 and 2018, Nepal experienced growth at an annual average of 7.50%, demonstrating its capacity for rapid expansion and double-digit growth. Today, Nepal maintains high foreign exchange reserves, reflecting a stable external sector, while inflation remains low, ensuring a favourable macroeconomic environment.

The private sector is the backbone of Nepal’s economy, contributing 81% to GDP and playing a similar role in employment generation. Recognising this, the Government of Nepal, on the initiative of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), has taken significant policy measures to enhance the investment climate. The endorsement of the Bilateral Investment Agreement framework and amendments to over 30 laws, driven by Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI)’s initiatives, have improved the ease of doing business. Furthermore, the establishment of the High-Level Economic Reform Commission, with private sector participation, underscores the government’s commitment to economic development.

With Nepal’s scheduled graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2026, the country is poised to elevate its economic potential. Duty-free access to the Indian and Chinese markets – two of the world's largest economies – offers Nepal unprecedented trade opportunities. Additionally, key sectors such as hydropower, tourism, Information communications Technology (ICT), modernised agriculture, biodiversity utilisation and renewable energy present significant growth prospects.

Given these developments, FNCCI, in partnership with the Government of Nepal, Honorary Consular Corps Nepal, and The Asia Foundation proposes the Nepal International Economic Summit – a structured dialogue platform aimed at identifying and prioritising key economic reforms through constructive debate and collaboration.
While various forums facilitate public-private dialogue on multiple issues, discussions on economic reforms remain fragmented. Many development partners have supported such initiatives, but a cohesive and comprehensive economic reform vision has yet to emerge.

The Nepal International Economic Summit 2025 aims to address this gap by serving as an institutionalised public-private dialogue mechanism. It will bring together policymakers, private sector leaders, development partners, and international experts to formulate a consensus-driven economic reform agenda. The summit’s outcomes will inform Nepal’s annual fiscal and monetary policies, guiding investment priorities and development aid allocation.
